Happy 2010! I hope you all survived the holidays with plenty of nourishing food in your bellies, and time to relax with loved ones. I had a great time away in New York City with my boyfriend, where I was able to spend time with my sisters and friends reflecting on our intentions for the new year. We even got to see HAIR on Broadway (Let the sunshine in, indeed), and eat at many yummy restaurants like this one! For those of you looking for great fitness tips to start the year off on the right foot, and don’t have too much time to spend at the gym, check out One Fit Foodie’s blog.
To kick off the New Year, I am offering a free giveaway from Rachael Ray Cookware . All you have to do is post a comment on this page about what your favourite kitchen tool is and why. I will then put your name in a cooking pot (as opposed to a hat) and have a draw on January 22nd. If you would like additional entries to increase your chances of winning, then try these 5 suggestions and make sure to include the links in your comments of where you have posted them.

My Favourite Kitchen Tools of the Trade
- Garlic Press: Since I put garlic in almost every dish I make (except for the sweet ones), I use a garlic press to crush the garlic without any mess. I put this in a bit of olive oil on a hot pan and wait until the garlic turns golden and emits a strong aroma, then I add onions and everything else! I also add it into all my dressings. Garlic isn’t the same if it’s chopped, it needs to be crushed!
- Salad Spinner: When you’re washing lettuce this tool is a must. The other option would be to dry it with towels, but I have found that method only stains all my white kitchen towels- green! Simply toss in your washed greens and “spin” them dry. There are all kinds of products on the market. Some have knobs you turn, or use a push-down mechanism. Other pluses, it’s a good workout for your biceps, and makes a fun paired activity- one person holds the bowl still, while the other turns it.
- Flexible Plastic Cutting Board: Because of the flexibility you can lift the contents of your cutting board into the bowl, and then you can toss it in the dishwasher! You should also own a few cutting boards, and use some just for meat, fish and poultry and others just for fruits and vegetables. Once I forgot I used the cutting board for an onion, and next thing I knew I was eating an onion flavoured apple!
- Spray Bottle for Oil: Fill this nonaerosol sprayer with your favorite oil and use it to coat pans and grills. Make sure to buy a container specifically advertised for use with oil.
- Food Processor and Blender: A food processor can make quick work of slicing, dicing, shredding, grating and chopping much easier and nicer to look at, (especially for vegetables like carrots, beets and cabbage that otherwise come out in funny shapes.) For smaller quantities, some people like to use a mandolin to make really paper-thin decorative cuts. A blender purees ingredients quickly, I use my blender for making smoothies! you can also get a hand-held immersion blender for pureeing soups easily in the pot. If you want the best blender in town, check out the Vitamix blender it is top of the line, and you can literally put in an entire squash to make a soup, or put in whole almonds to make almond butter!
Here's a yummy gingery dessert for you to fight off winter colds!...
Yummo Pineapple-Ginger Sorbet

1 inch piece fresh ginger, peeled, 1 ripe pineapple, peeled, cored and cut in cubes , 1/4 teaspoon almond extract pinch salt 4 Tablespoons your choice of sweetener ,juice of 1 lime 3 Tablespoons orange juice or more if needed.
Freeze pineapple in a Ziploc bag. Remove from freezer about 25 min. before starting the recipe so it will not be brick-hard. With food processor running, drop ginger through feed tube. Add pineapple a few chunks at a time. Add remaining ingredients. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as required. Process till the mixture is smooth and creamy, adding a little more oj to help it along if necessary. Serve immediately. As you can imagine there are a lot of possibilities for this. You could add a half of a very ripe banana to the mixture for example, or you can serve it with slice banana and shredded coconut. Serves 6 generously, even 8. (Thanks C. L for the recipe idea!)
Live creatively, give wholeheartedly & nourish yourself like your heart depends on it

A couple of my very favorite kitchen tools are:
My crockpot- when I am not feeling good and have no energy to cook, my good friend, missy my crockpot, comes to the rescue (yall do name your kitchen wares, right! Of course.)
My egg slicer- We raise chickens so we have lots of eggs and I am completely enthralled with my egg slicer. I have slice mushrooms and green onions with it before and it works mighty nifty.
My cultery- I am all about good knives, so having a set that cost my first born is a must.
My microplaner- Martha Stewart turned me onto this gadget and I am smitten with it. So many uses!
I could go on for days, but I will spare yall. Thanks so much for the awesome giveaway and for the opportunity to enter my name to win it.
Our favorite cookware, which is sadly in deep storage, is our ever popular cast iron pan. Heavy and hot, it cooks everything to perfection. Tempeh, tofu, sautees of all kinds. Crisp french toast, perfect grilled sandwiches. The extra bonus is that it infuses all your dishes with iron! We have been longing for a stockpot. Winter is perfect weather for soups and stews- sadly our pots are too small!! (crossing fingers for that Rachel Ray stockpot….Maybe even an orange one??) Yay TastyLife!
I think my glass cutting board is my favorite kitchen tool. Every time I take it out, it looks (and is) clean. It makes the meal preparation more enjoyable, and aesthetically pleasing throughout. I know that it’s all aesthetics and no practicality (doesn’t bend) or taste (doesn’t bring out aromas), but it sets the tone for a meal so that that bit of extra effort, creativity and presentation flourish is put into it. I think it makes my meals better. Once you go glass, there’s no going back. Just put a nice big glass cutting board next to a plastic one with knife track marks, tomato stains and plastic bits that look ready to join your curry and see which is more inspiring. Glass cutting board it is.
My favorite kitchen tool is for sure my garlic press. Especially the one i have at the moment. The last two i had broke from too much use, so i invested 30 dollars in a fancy one and its amazing.
There are many other nice tools, way more sophisticated, but the garlic press brings garlic goodness into my cooking and that makes it my favorite.
I will say my deep sided skillet, aka chicken fryer. I use is nearly every day from stir fry to pasta it’s my go to pan!
My favorite kitchen tool is my chopping knife. I think I use that more than any other tool!
I love my wood cutting board. It gets more beautiful with each use! The older it gets, the more character it acquires and reminds me of all the delicious food I’ve prepared on it.

My favourite tool is my champion juicer I found at a garage sale. Not only because I only paid 20 $ for it. ( The lady who sold it didn’t know what it was….!) I run basically everything through it from red beets, spinach, lettuce, carrots and in the winter LOTS of ginger!
Also it makes a great vegan dessert: I put frozen bananas, a couple of coco beans and some nuts through it- ready is a wonderful creamy dessert..so easy and soooo delioucious. You can do the same with frozen mangos mixed with some berries…yum yum yum!
My favorite kitchen tool has now become my Magic Bullet. I can make fresh salsa, guacamole, hummus…best of all….I can make some amazing smoothies in no time….my kids love it to…..instead of having cookies after school they now love to have some fresh hummus with carrots and celery or a nice tasty fruit smoothie…..I got it as a gift at Xmas and don’t know as a busy Mom, how I lived without it……When I need a treat for having taught a yoga class to my 2-4 year olds, I make myself a smoothie, sit on my mat and meditate……
Great Newsletter and Web site…..

I love my Kitchen Aid Mixer. I can throw the ingredients in and clean up while it does the work! I linked your contest on my blog. I love new cookware!
I love my old cast iron skillet! It cooks like a dream and adds more iron to my food. As for recent additions to my kitchen, my newest fave is my Juicer! I’m finally getting the suggested serving of fruit and veg every day, and my energy has really improved. Yummm!
Very excited about this contest! Let’s see, my favorite tool would probably be my blender. It’s nowhere near the best blenders (still dreaming about a vitamix!) but I use it at least a couple times every day to make juice, smoothies, and/or puddings.

I’m absolutely a kitchen tool/gadget obsessed!!!! I keep buying new stuffs… my kitchen is soooo full but I’m so happy looking at them. My last purchase was a soy milk and porridge maker… I love it because it makes my beloved porridge messy-free and so easy.
I love my food processor. It makes soups, breadcrumbs, and tons of other stuff much easier to make!
I’m a newsletter subscriber.
I love my magic bullet!
My favorite kitchen tool would have to be the spoon. Its just so useful for eating food quickly. One of my problems is that I literally inhale food, and often the fork isn’t fast enough. Think a bout the proverbial debate about how to eat Kraft Dinner. I always go spoon- more food per second. mmmmm…..
